About Toucan Music

Our Mission

Toucan Music is a UK net label specialising in electronic music, particularly house, trance, breakbeat, chillout and hardcore. Our mission is to provide original high quality, full length music downloads within these genres, in the most popular file formats.

Our music covers a broad range of styles, with some of our artists producing more commercial pop influenced tracks, and some producing harder, more experimental and minimal music. The Toucan vibe is generally upbeat and melodic, with strong lead sounds and catchy hook in most of our tracks.

Toucan Music is not a registered company or business at present.

Background

JohnToucan Music was called Frantik Music until 1st January 2004 and first went online in October 1997. Our music was first freely available for downloading in MP3 format at the end of December 1999. You can view a detailed history here.
Toucan Music is run by John Dalling, who has been producing electronic music since 1994 under various artist names including Psychadelik Pedestrian, JMD and Hyperterminal. John was born in Bromley, England, in 1978, and now lives near Llanelli in Wales. John is also responsible for the design and content of the Toucan Music website. As well as electronic music, John's interests include playing snooker... and drinking Belgian fruit beer! John is married to long suffering "internet widow" Louise, and works full time in a higher education library.

Using Toucan Music

Creative Commons LicenseLots of the music you'll find on this website is licenced under a Creative Commons licence, which not only gives you the chance to use it, e.g. in your DJ sets or in your own podcasts, but also sometimes gives you the chance to remix it, sample it or do with it as you wish! Each release has a different licence, so where you see a symbol such as this one, click on it to find out exactly how you can use the tracks in that release.

The one thing we do ask is that, if you use any Toucan Music tracks, you put a link to www.toucanmusic.co.uk on your website, podcast, CD sleeve or wherever else you list your credits. Finally, you will see some releases on the site that don't have a Creative Commons licence symbol. These releases are under traditional copyright so please do ask before using them. Thanks for reading this and enjoy the music!

What Is A Netlabel?

Our Definition

A Net Label (also known as netlabel, web label or internet label) is the online equivalent of a record label; that is a music label providing tracks that are downloadable from the internet, instead of, or as well as, on CD, tape or vinyl. The majority of net labels provide a large amount of free material, which can be often be distributed legally free of charge via a Creative Commons Licence. Most Toucan Music tracks are free to download at present, however we also offer some pay-per-download premium release material which is sold through external sites.
